DulQuer Southscope interview on August 2012
My Father was a little sceptical about my becoming an actor
He is truly the man of the moment. Anyone who is even remotely familiar with Malayalam cinema will know Dulquer Salman’s illustrious lineage. Because he is, after all, the son of one of the doyens of Malayalam cinema - Mammootty! Being the son of such a huge superstar, one would expect him to make a foray into tinsel town with much fanfare and celebration. But that was not to be, because neither father nor son believed in having a grand launch. His debut film Second Show happened just like any other movie, and the response it generated saw the birth of a new star. Dulquer Salman might have made a quiet entry into the industry, but people were watching very keenly, nevertheless… Posing exclusively for Southscope at the popular and picturesque The Residency Towers Hotel in Chennai, Dulquer impresses with his charming good looks styled in impeccable clothes from Gatsby. Unni R Nair in a rapid-fire Q&A with the actor.
Question: Was the pressure of being Mammootty’s son overwhelming when you started work on Second Show?
Yes, that’s what you would expect, considering who my father is. But we wanted to keep the hype down, and just make a good film. I didn’t want it to be my ‘launch vehicle’, which works in some cases, and doesn’t in most. There wasn’t any strategic move or planning or anything like that. I liked the script. It felt like a genuinely good movie, and my character was not larger than life or anything. They wanted to do a lot on location, and I think the anonymity helped us do the film quickly and quietly. I never wanted to, or thought of having a big launch. I was listening to scripts in Tamil and Malayalam, and I happened to like this.
What was the response from the industry? For those in the industry, it was like a boy from their fraternity doing his first film. They welcomed me with open arms. The film fraternity is like one big family, warm and encouraging.
